A Commentary: PC Builder’s Final Showdown
Earlier this day at around 1PM, I arrived at SM Megamall to witness PC Buyer’s Guide: ICT Roadshow 2010 and to support a friend representing our school to the PC Builder’s Final Showdown wherein 12 participants from different universities and colleges are to compete. A mini symposium on over-clocking was presented, the same one they did in their campus tour at our University. Raffles were given, and again, the same one’s they gave at their tour that of a Canon Pixma Printer, a myPhone and a stuffed toy.
Before the showdown began, they were taught on-the-spot how to connect the power LED in the USB slot in the CPU they were to assemble. Not being a pain in the ass but in a computer science student’s perspective, this is quite unethical to begin with. Why do you need such an indicator? To see if the CPU is actually working? What if the said LED cannot carry the voltage regulated? It may result to an overcurrent should there be an abnormal low-resistance connection between the nodes of the LED due to different voltages regulated. Anyhow, that’s only my point of view and it’s their contest, their policy and I am simply stating my opinion.
The power LED occurrence was no biggie at all. The thing that caught my attention is that of how 12 participants’ finishing times will be recorded. I saw only one representative from PC Buyer’s Guide holding a timer and to be exact, it’s a smartphone and they’re using a split timer. When one shouts “I am MSI” with their screw driver held up high, this signifies that they are finish and that one-man timer goes to the place of the participant and records his time through that smartphone’s timer. This is where all it gets screwed up. I was expecting to see those devices that you have to tap and a buzzer gets ringing like those you see in game shows but I was totally wrong. It’s manually done by one man. How accurate can that recording be? Here are some instances, what if two raised their hands at the same time and nobody saw who finished first? What if one contestant was overlooked? Don’t tell me it’s impossible, it just happened earlier wherein our representative should have placed third or fourth instead of fifth. But that’s not the issue, it’s how the recording of time was done. Where’s the ever-changing technology in that?
Second is the inconsistency in the parts given. Some participants were given a structure with a VGA slot and the others a HDMI slot. Personally speaking, I do believe that there’s no difference whether it’s that slot or the other but hey, you’re in a contest and you should provide consistency in each of the participants. I also saw two contestants who lack screws and have to ask the marshals on the duration of the building contest for one. And oh, did I say that the marshals inspected the parts before the event began? Yes, they did and overlooked the screws and each screw and or parts missing corresponds to ten seconds penalty to the total time of the participant.
No cash prizes, no certificates, no consolations.
Well, in my view, I believe that this is a so-so event which needs further amplifications and when I say further, I mean A LOT. Anyhow, congratulations to AMA for being the champion this year with 4 minutes and 6 seconds of total time, St. Paul University for being the 1st runner-up and Ateneo for placing 2nd runner-up.
Diecisiete Personas Importantes
"To seventeen important people who mattered most."
O pano, last semester na natin to. Wala na dapat susumpungin ah.
5. Ana PasagueNakasama ko to nuong Eleksyon 2010 nuong Mayo bilang isang watcher.
Bawi ako next time. For now, kita-kits sa campus sa aking huling semestre.
One take lang dapat ah.
15. Van [Insert surname here] and Thea PeñaflorMga kaibigan ng kapatid kong pangalawa.
Bawi nalang next time.
17. Antonette OpisIsa sa mga naging classmate ko mula first year at masarap din syang kausap kapag seryoso. Lasang chocolate.
Bago magtapos, may programming drill pa kaming dapat gawin. Wala akong masabe.

Of Cristy Fermin
This was all about the airing of TV 5's Juicy, an entertainment news talk about the controversial people in show business, dated July 5, 2010. The segment was a blind item about an athlete who recently got separated from a popular celebrity and if you had been watching news the couple of weeks, you know who I am referring to. The anchors in that segment made comments unpleasant to the ears of the mass. It was like listening to a I-want-to-judge-you-so-badly-that-you'll-shit-bricks portion rather than a blind item of some sorts. The thing that made the scene grotesque is when one anchor said how stupid and dumbfounded the blind item person is and what made it worse was when Cristy Fermin at 1:40 on the video, took unto account University of the East's name into the mudslinging arena with words, "Kaya pala sa UE nalang sya nag-aral." (That's why he went to UE to study.) And to that I raise my middle finger.
I was then again asked by a professor at University of the East of what can I say about the horrendous remark made by Cristy and my answer can be found at a screenshot below:
My response was made after I had watched the said video and I do not regret, whatsoever, the statements I had said.
Again, what more could we expect from here? (She was educated without ethics, morality and integrity. That's why she lost her job at network giant ABS-CBN for slanderous remarks against Ms. Nadia Montenegro and yet she has not learned her lesson. I think she wants to be fired again.) You can read an article about that issue here. Prior to that, she was also convicted by the Supreme Court of the Philippines of libel and was ordered to pay a fine and damages caused to couple Anabelle Rama and Eddie Guttierez instead of having to serve a term in jail that was issued by the lower court.
Moving on, she could have just said the blind item's name and not have to include any institution, related or unrelated to the aforementioned but by having said the institution's name, you generalize the community as a whole. And then again, what more could we expect from a famacide journalist who seems to have a credibility below the ordinate of a Cartesian plane? What more could we expect from someone who is not discernible of the codes of professional journalism? What more could we expect from a person who slanders to make for a living? And if you're asking to yourselves, "Saan bang eskwelahan nanggaling yang si Cristy at kala mo kung sino magsalita?" (Where did Cristy took her education to have her brag like that?) I would like to take the liberty not to mention what institution she came from for if ever I made such comments against it, I would be compared to her or maybe even far worse than her monstrous attitude.
If there would be someone from the Legal Affairs Department of University of the East to leap onto this issue, it would be of great action to take journalist like Cristy out of the scene as to not stain the principles of the said field. I am not that good at law but I do believe a slander lawsuit can be filed of which can follow a slander retraction which must be requested twenty (20) days from the time you learned about the slander or maybe a libel suit would do.
Anyhow, I would like to see actions against her filed as to teach her a lesson she has forgotten overtime.
I am from University of the East speaking loud and proud.

To start off with this entry, may I quote this excerpt:
Bill Hemmer: "You said cancer changes your life, and oftentimes for the better."
Joel Siegel: "Yes.... Gilda Radner... said this in her book. What cancer does is, it forces you to focus, to prioritize, and you learn what's important. I mean, I don't sweat the small stuff. I used to get angry at cab drivers. It's not worth it.... And when somebody says you have cancer, you realize it's all small stuff. And what Gilda said is, if it weren't for the downside, everyone would want to have it. But there is a downside."
- American Morning, CNN, 13 June 2003
With all what's happening, I guess I have to believe that life really is short to dwell on insignificant things. Instead of giving them your priceless attention, you should focus on matters of significant importance for you do not really know when you'll face the inevitable - death.
Earlier this afternoon, I had received a reply from my mom who went to the hospital to visit my godmother's husband who had underwent a major operation. It took time before the content of the message got to me. I was dumbfounded. It said that my godmother's husband is diagnosed with the fourth most common cancer worldwide - gastric cancer - and one sad thing about it is that his case is at Stage IV.
Until the moment upon writing this entry, I am still at shock of the news. The questions of "how and why" came into thought of why their family has to suffer such an experience when they still have two young children that would be needing a fatherly figure; and of how millions of people in the world, why was my godmother's husband part of the cancer statistics. These are usual queries that pondered and yet, it cannot cure the incurable.
As I end this, may I give my sincerest acknowledgement to the people fighting everyday against cancer and how they are doing it with a smile in their face. I know that it is a road of perplexity but with the people behind you that of family, relatives and friends, I know you can get through all of it.
Vox Populi
I gave Gilbert "Gibo" Teodoro my support last May 10 not because of his proficient academic attainments or his resourcefulness in speaking to the Filipino masses about his realistic and doable platforms but because of the political savvy he has as a leader. That savvy is not taught in any government position or in those well-known graduate schools, but I saw it with this man. Too bad, he will be the president we never had. Even though he did not win this election, I can still proudly say that I am one of the approximately 3.6 million people who intelligently chose who they think is fit to run for six years as the president of our country and my unwavering support is still with him until he runs again for public office. If you will still further ask, "Why Gibo? Why not Erap?" My answer will still be: "For I believe in him."
In Teodoro’s refusal to mud-sling and appeal to the lowest common denominator in electoral politics; in his defiance to play the blame-the-media game; and in his stubborn refusal to accommodate party interests, I see principle. I see something I can consider to be moral integrity, the sort neither Aquino nor Villar understands. (Perez, M., 2010.)
Mr. Teodoro had both the character and competence to run for the presidency. He did not play the that-survey-is-statistically-incorrect or the blame-the-media game for instead of wasting his time seeking for publicity, he went to provinces and got to know more people. He stood away from the limelight unlike those who threw mud on national television for reasons to clear their name of the allegations that they claim to be false but drew most of their attention to it.
But the campaign ends here with more than twelve (12) million people having to comfortably cast their vote for presidential front-runner Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III. After all, he's an Aquino and the child of the late democratic icon President Corazon Aquino so, that gave him all the support he needs to make a landslide victory.
Southeast Asia including United States of America, Australia and Canada have their eyes on the incoming president and the issues that need to be addressed that of first, the issue on Hacienda Luisita which came to be the perfect example of a failure in agrarian reform. They are watching what can another Aquino do and can he eliminate the elitism in our country with his mother, along with the previous presidents that had failed to do so. He has lots of matters to tackle on and appearing on national television every now and then will not be much of help.
You may now be irritated with how I am judging Mr. Aquino despite him not yet being instilled in office and me being an ordinary person. Well, at the first place no one forced you to read several paragraphs and conclude that I am wrong just because your thoughts are not in conjunction with mine. This blog site is not a space for kids to run around and whine like I took their candy. Though I would appreciate your comment. as long as it does not provide a novel-like opinion. For your novel-like opinion, you can create your own blog site here. Come on, entertain me.
Anyhow, every story must come to an end. It took me awhile to convince myself to type the content of this blog as I have promised not to write political articles as they provide a storyline that has an infinite loop programmed. In other words, it translates the same stories, same political agenda and whatever trash that loops for publicity. And with Mr. Aquino soon being the next president, it's like going back to 1898 wherein we'll have again the historical People Power. Well, it would be quite ironic to see another people power wherein the agenda of those joining is to oust the son of a democratic icon. That is a must see.
To end this, may Gilbert "Gibo" Teodoro do well with all his endeavors in life and Godbless the Philippines.

Click HERE for more info.
Jejemon dito, jejebusters doon.

[ How many EDSA revolution does the Filipino people want? Up to 69? If ever you successfully impeached the president that you have voted, who will you choose to take his position? If ever you are not satisfied with the system of the newly-seated one, will you do the same to him like the first? ]
At least, may natupad sya sa mga sinabi nya sa huling State of the Nation Address noong 2009 and I quote:
"At the end of this speech I shall step down from this stage, but not from the Presidency. My term does not end until next year. Until then, I will fight for the ordinary Filipino. The nation comes first. There is much to do as Head of State—to the very last day."
Dos
First blog for the year. My indolence ate me when I was bound to express my ideas in this blog of mine. Anyhow, let's proceed with what I have in mind before laziness strikes me again.
Another academic year is over so as the thought of being a junior. Everything went well, managed to pass all my enrolled courses with grades I am satisfied of. Indeed, last semester might be one of the semesters to remember aside from the perspective of having to graduate. We had our thesis writing class in that semester and to cut it short for the lazy people like me out there, we did not only managed to pass but pass as the top two (2) thesis defenders of the computer science department.
What really happened before that defense day was all history and few did know what me and my other groupmate had to endure. We were four in the group. You might be asking what the other two did, yes, they did something but not to the extent of what we did that of sleeping at around 3AM everyday to have that thesis constructed. You might also say that I have a personal grudge, and I will be very blunt to say a yes to that and this is my way to relieve that grudge and forget everything. A big gap in communication, as said by a friend, was the factor to why only two of us did most, if not all, of the documentation processes.
I have to say that I lost my patience back then and sent them a somewhat blunt message to have their minds open. One replied and told what she had in her mind and retorted with an answer that me and group member A are the only ones able to understand what should be done and that I never assign such specific tasks to them. I am not a dictator to tell you what to do and have it done in a span of time. I am more of a democrat wherein we must do this as a whole, as a group that of you approaching to me and ask what else can be done than me having to give you a set of what-to-do and only to find out that you cannot handle it. Anyhow, I wanted to respond to her claim but being an educated person and having to know that this will only lead to irrelevant arguments, I opted to accept the opinion. I could care less if ever they read this. Seriously.

Enough of the crap and let's get rolling with what is essential. We managed to literally rush the documentation. Rush in the sense of having to complete it one month prior to the deadline. How we did it? Try sleeping at three o'clock everyday in the morning and you'll see. Defense date came and I managed to be calm all the way. We answered the necessary questions although there were several dead air moments and just smiled. But to sum it up, we did a satisfactory performance. It ended and we still have to wait for the results in the next coming days.
After a few days of the defense for all those who took it and passed, there was this recognition event to honor the top five defenders from the Information Technology and Computer Science department. Only group member A was able to attend the said event. Personally and not being hypocritical about it, I was expecting to be at any rank of the top five but did not expect landing second. Well, it was all theoretical due to the fact that there were few computer science students who took their thesis, most were friends of ours as well.
I am now cutting the bragging rights portion. Our group consisted of ordinary students and ordinary in the sense of not being scholars, having an exceeding beyond expectation grades, an excellent intellectual capacity and the what-not of an ordinary student. What I want to say is that, not because you're the ordinary type who sits and sleeps in classroom discussions is that it will be a reason for you not to go beyond what is essential and ride the same boats that of those outstanding students. Not because you're not known in your college as an individual is that you will just sit there and remain so.
I can proudly say and end this blog with imparting to all of you that we are the living examples that you too can attain what you dream of despite whatever academic background you have. You might not be the top student of your time or one of them who has straight-A's, but with proper determination, you too can fly and manage your own plane and who knows, you might fly higher than them and exceed other people's expectations.
Retrospective Sojourn: A Year-End Blog
Retrospective Sojourn
A Year-End Blog
In a land so far away that I don’t even know the name of the place, there lived a beautiful elf that is discerned by the name Ashkire. She wanted to get married someday to a mere human but the elven law forbids it. With that said, they ran away from the woods to get married and oh, this isn’t really part of my year-end blog entry. Let’s begin?
It’s been a heck of a roller coaster ride for that year, 2009. The unexpected came as titans fall with the global economic recession and whatnot during that year. Individuals lost jobs and were left in debt due to the unstable economic market. But hey, that will all be part our history books.
In that year it was, I have learned great lessons in life from other individuals who I have met and became friends with. With them coming to aisle, others left through the exit doors with reasons undisclosed. Who cares about them leaving? They’re not of significant importance. Concerning the lesson learned, I still stumble upon that expression from my Differential Calculus professor and I quote her, “Laban kung laban. Patay kung patay” in which I had applied in Digital and Logic Designs, a course under my degree, wherein hope was little for those with little faith to pass the aforesaid course. I still remember those words inscribed in the pin of that professor – “Got Faith?” I hold on to my faith that I will pass and I did and of course, with the aid of friends that taught me with my difficulties. With those people that I’ve met, I say thank you for coming to that same aisle and for leaving lessons in that aisle’s wall.
It was on the 26th of September when massive flood had hit Manila due to typhoon Ondoy (Ketsana). Many cities that of Marikina, Cainta, Pasig, some parts of Quezon City and Rizal were submerged into deep waters. Many lost their homes, families and livelihood due to the said typhoon and it was said to be worse than the flood in 1967. A week after, another weather disturbance came in the name of typhoon Pepeng (Parma) and its wrath centered Northern Luzon. The region suffered the same fate or even worse as of those in Metro Manila. Again, many were left homeless, missing and some found but were already dead. With that said, my brother and I temporarily evacuated from our house in Pasig to Robinson’s Place Residences in Pedro Gil, it was our tito and tita’s condo unit. We stayed there for almost two weeks far away from the care of our mother. We learned to become, somehow, independent even though our tita was always there to assist us. It was one heck of an experience to see shallow waters in the heart of Metro Manila and be far from home.
I learned how to act a native story on a stage with my colleagues in Literature class, danced the tango during my last Physical Education, kept the faith and passed in the Digital and Logic Designs class even though that light of hope narrowed, aided the survivors of the typhoons through cosplays with the event entitled Jizen Haku: A “Cause”-play Event together with our group, UE Red Shield and the lot of which I can no longer remember for I am getting old and suffering from short term memory.
Kidding aside, that year it was will be remembered and the experiences stumbled upon will be carried over to this coming year, 2010, as to not commit the same mistakes and fall down again.
I can no longer make a list of the people who took the time to take a ride with me. Well, let’s wrap this up. Ladies and gentlemen, I am Dave Tan greeting you all a Happy and Prosperous New Year and it will be again my privilege to let you join my ride for 2010!

English and Filipino
Many have scrutinized with regards to the language I am using when creating such a blog entry. Some said that why use English when your topic is all about your country and such related issue. Some say that it is like abandoning our own language, Filipino, which I totally do not agree with. I could care less about what they say since this is my bandwith and not theirs. As stated in my first entry, "I am not in this world to live up to your expectations. . ." and I had already anticipated that it was understood.
Anyhow, it doesn't matter what language you use in expressing what you want. You can roll around like a lunatic just to show how much you care for a person and since that is how you show it, I guess they will understand. If that does not work, try to roll some more.
Using English will not hurt your own country any more than using Filipino will hurt the world. You can use whatever language you want for we have our free will to do so.
Translation:

What is Vaedant? It's the subject of the anagram of my name. What are anagrams you ask?
"An anagram is the rearrangement of the letters of a word, name, phrase, sentence, title, or the like into another word or phrase."
- anagrammy.com
With that being said, the title of this first entry is also an anagram. Can you decrypt what is its subject of the anagram? I'll give you a clue. In Latin, its meaning is "spoken before".
Anyhow, this idea came to be when I was bored one day while wasting my time sitting infront of the computer browsing forums and spamming... err..posting in sensible threads. I said to myself that I needed a new name to use in the said forums. To cut the boring story short, Vaedant was invented.
You may happen to be bored by now reading such nonsense, so let's fast-forward everything. What will you expect in this space of bandwith? I'll be typing such things which I deem of importance or simply because I-want-to-criticize-this-and-that. Do not worry, I happen to do the latter if I am bored wherein most of the time, I am.
Before I close the tip of my 'cyberpen', let me quote Fritz Perls:
"I am not in this world to live up to your expectations, and you are not in this world to live up to mine. You are you and I am I, and if by chance we find each other, then it is beautiful. If not, it can't be helped."
